Tennis star Djokovic dismisses blister issues to progress in the US Open tournament
Novak Djokovic, the 38-year-old tennis legend, began his quest for a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title at the US Open with an impressive win against an unseeded 19-year-old American opponent. The match ended with scores of 6-1, 7-6 (7/3), 6-2.
The contest was an unusual one, with the first set lasting a mere 20 minutes, while the second set extended to an hour and 20 minutes. Djokovic started the match in a scorching manner, racking up winners to take the first set easily.
Despite occasional signs of rustiness, Djokovic showcased flashes of his career-defining brilliance. His opponent, Tien, had a chance to make the second set 1-1 but couldn't convert a break point. Tien managed to break Djokovic for 5-2 in the third set, but Djokovic responded emphatically by breaking back immediately to win the match.
Tien saved a match point on Djokovic's serve, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Serbian's victory. Djokovic claimed the second set tie break after clever net attacks and sublime variation.
Djokovic skipped the ATP Masters events in Toronto and Cincinnati to focus on the US Open. He took a medical timeout for treatment to his right foot before the third set, but this didn't seem to affect his performance.
After the match, Djokovic expressed his admiration for his young opponent's game and expressed that he wishes he had the age of his opponent, as he approaches his late 30s. He emphasised the importance of learning to preserve energy for what matters.
Holding his nerve during the second set was key to his victory, Djokovic stated. He expressed that he still has the flair and drive, and that the crowd gives him energy, hoping to keep his performance going.
Djokovic will face US qualifier Zachary Svajda in the second round of the US Open. With his sights set on the record-breaking 21st Grand Slam title, Djokovic will be aiming to maintain his form and progress through the tournament. His last match was on July 11, 2025, in the Wimbledon semi-final against Jannik Sinner before competing at the US Open.
