Tennessee's football team will face Georgia without their starting cornerbacks in the upcoming game
The Tennessee Volunteers have started their season on a positive note, winning their first two games against Syracuse and East Tennessee State. However, they are set to face a significant challenge in Week 3, as they take on No. 6 Georgia for their SEC opener.
The Vols will be shorthanded for this crucial match-up, with starting cornerbacks Jermod McCory and Rickey Gibson both sidelined due to injuries. McCory, who was one of the best cornerbacks in the country in 2024, suffered a torn ACL in January and has not played this season. Gibson, on the other hand, played in the season opener against Syracuse but went down with an undisclosed injury and did not play in Week 2.
The Vols' shorthanded secondary may struggle against Gunner Stockton and the Georgia passing game. However, the team has shown resilience so far, with Joey Aguilar stepping up to lead the passing game. Aguilar has been stellar over the first two weeks, and the burden to keep pace against Georgia may fall on his shoulders.
The Volunteers had an impressive victory over Syracuse, with Mike Hass returning a fumble for a touchdown in that game. Colton Hood, a Colorado transfer, has also made a significant impact, leading the FBS with five pass breakups through two weeks.
After the Georgia game, McCoy and Gibson will have some time to get healthy before the rest of the SEC slate gets underway at the end of September. The team will also have a non-conference tilt against UAB in Week 4.
Georgia, on the other hand, has not been tested this year, but their roster is still considered talented. The Bulldogs have yet to face a significant challenge, and the Vols will be looking to upset the odds in Week 3.
This SEC opener promises to be an exciting match-up, with both teams eager to make a statement. The Vols will need to play their best football to stay competitive against the highly-rated Bulldogs.
