In the past week, Indonesia has been gripped by a wave of violent protests, marking the worst unrest since President Prabowo Subianto took office last year. The demonstrations, primarily triggered by student organizations such as BEM SI, were sparked by discontent over economic inequality and lavish perks for lawmakers. However, they later widened to include anger against the police.

The unrest occurred in several jurisdictions, including Greater Jakarta, Makassar in South Sulawesi, Central Java, and Papua. These disturbances have affected Southeast Asia's biggest economy, causing significant disruption.

One incident that contributed to the growing anger was the killing of a young driver by a paramilitary unit. Footage of this tragic event circulated widely, fuelling public outrage. Amnesty International Indonesia and the state-affiliated National Commission on Human Rights (Komnas HAM) both reported 10 deaths due to the unrest, with Komnas HAM also reporting over 900 injuries. Anis Hidayah, the head of Komnas HAM, stated that there are indications some deaths were due to excessive force by authorities.

Thousands of people were detained during the unrest, although most have since been released. The President was forced to make a U-turn on perks for legislators due to the public outcry.

Amnesty International Indonesia has urged the government to conduct an independent investigation into the incidents that took place during the protests. The authorities, including the police and military, have been blamed for the violent crackdowns and mutilations during the protests.

The protests have highlighted the deep-seated discontent among the Indonesian people, particularly regarding economic inequality and political corruption. As the dust settles, it remains to be seen how the government will address these issues and prevent such unrest from happening again in the future.
