Orange Warning for Flooding in Latvia Until Monday

The Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LVĢMC) has issued an orange warning for flooding of river banks and low-lying areas in the regions of Latgale, Sēlija, and many parts of Vidzeme. The warning is in effect until Monday, June 9.

This warning comes as heavy rain and high river water levels are expected throughout the weekend and into the beginning of next week. Rain will be present on both Saturday and Sunday, with localised heavy showers and thunderstorms. However, the precipitation zones at the end of this week and beginning of next week will not be as extensive as at the end of May.

On Saturday, the air temperature will be moderately warm, ranging between 18-23 C during the day. However, on Sunday, the air temperature will become a few degrees cooler. On Monday, there will be a gusty westerly wind, and the temperatures will reach only 12 to 17 C.

Despite the moderately warm weather over the weekend, the high water levels and rain may cause damage. Flooding occurred in some places in Latgale and Vidzeme at the end of May, and there are still puddles in some places in the countryside due to saturated soil in central and eastern Latvia.

At the beginning of the new week, temperatures will be noticeably lower. On Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures will become 1-3 degrees warmer than on Monday.

The LVĢMC advises residents in the affected areas to take precautions to protect their property from flooding. They also urge people to stay informed about the latest weather conditions and follow any instructions from local authorities.

During the day on Saturday, sunshine will also be present, offering a brief respite from the rain. It is important to remember that even a few hours of sunshine cannot dry out saturated soil quickly, and the risk of flooding remains.

Residents are encouraged to stay safe and avoid walking or driving through floodwaters, as they can be deceptively deep and fast-moving. The LVĢMC will continue to monitor the situation closely and issue updates as necessary.
