Detmold, a city in East Westphalia-Lippe, has been making significant strides in sustainability and climate resilience, earning it the title of the "greenest city in Germany." According to Mayor Frank Hilker, this accolade comes in response to the German Environmental Aid's (DUH) heat check.
The city's top position is partly attributed to the sustainable industrial park, Sander, located in Lippe. This park contributes positively to Detmold's green city status, not only through its sustainable practices but also by setting an example for other industrial areas.
Detmold boasts the best combination of green space and sealed area among 190 cities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, as per a study. This balance between urban development and greenery is a testament to the city's commitment to sustainability.
Innovative measures are being implemented to enhance this green city status. For instance, an innovative sponge city concept will be implemented in the park, Sander, which aims to store collected rainwater in the soil for evaporative cooling. This strategy will help manage rainwater effectively and reduce heat stress in urban areas.
The Schloßplatz renovation is another significant step towards mitigating climate impacts. The renovation includes the planting of 39 new trees, improving the city's microclimate and contributing to its greenery. The new trees are part of a broader effort to enhance Detmold's greenery and climate resilience.
The city's "green belt" expansion is another noteworthy initiative. A total of 3.3 million euros will flow into this project, which includes the development of pocket parks and the future "Zukunfts-Lust-Park Friedrichstal" at the open-air museum. One pocket park is planned in close proximity to the shopping street on the site of the former Töberich nursery.
Mayor Hilker has also discussed additional measures for preserving greenery, such as building within existing structures in the "Britensiedlung" cooperatives to prevent further sealing and protect existing trees. The Britensiedlung cooperatives in Detmold practice sustainable building methods to preserve existing greenery.
The new ranking by the German Environmental Aid includes a heat-affected index, based on averaged satellite data. In this ranking, Detmold ranks 8th nationwide, 6th in North Rhine-Westphalia, and 1st in East Westphalia-Lippe.
Thorsten Engelhardt is the person responsible for conducting surveys in the city portal. The Schloßplatz renovation includes a strategy to improve the city's climate resilience, contributing to Detmold's ongoing efforts to become a model of sustainability and climate resilience for other cities.
