Teenager succumbs to gunshot injuries on Southwest Side, according to authorities' statement
In the early hours of Monday, a tragic shooting took place on the Southwest Side of Chicago, claiming the life of a 15-year-old boy. The victim, identified as Enrique Gomez, was shot in the head and later died at Christ Hospital.
The shooting occurred in the 8200-block of South St. Louis Avenue in Ashburn, around 3:10 a.m. According to reports, another individual, a 43-year-old man, was also shot and sustained a graze wound to the nose. He was taken to the same hospital but is reported to be in good condition.
No one is currently in custody in relation to the shooting. The Chicago Police Department (CPD) is yet to provide details about what led up to the incident. Area One detectives are investigating the shooting, and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the boy's death on Friday.
The Interactive Safety Tracker, a tool that allows tracking of crime and safety in neighbourhoods, shows the area where the shooting took place as one that has experienced gun violence in the past.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Enrique Gomez during this difficult time. As this is an ongoing investigation, we will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as more information becomes available.
