Team laments loss of veteran talent scout

The Atlanta Braves and the world of baseball are mourning the loss of Roy Clark, a man universally regarded as one of the best talent evaluators in the game. Clark passed away at his Atlanta home last night at the age of 68.

Clark began his career with the Braves in 1989, working as a scout. His impact on the team was enormous, as evidenced by the players he was credited with bringing in. Over the years, he was responsible for drafting and signing several notable players, including Brian McCann, Jeff Francoeur, Tim Hudson, Brandon McCarthy, Jair Jurrjens, Jason Heyward, and Julio Teheran, to name a few.

In 2000, Clark was appointed as the director of scouting for the Braves, a position he held until 2009. After leaving the Braves, he worked in personnel roles with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals. He returned to the Braves as Senior Advisor to Amateur Scouting in 2014 and continued to make a significant impact until his departure in 2018.

The Atlanta Braves have released a statement mourning the passing of Roy Clark, describing him as one of the most successful and respected scouts in baseball history. Mark Bowman, an MLB.com reporter, echoed this sentiment, referring to Clark as an all-time scout. Jonathan Mayo, another MLB.com reporter, added that Clark was a fantastic person to talk to about the game.

The Braves have posted a tweet with a picture in memory of Roy Clark, and the team continues to make moves amidst the season, with the impact left by Clark being huge. Roy Clark will be sorely missed not just in the Atlanta Braves' clubhouse, but on any team he was with.

Before his time with the Braves, Clark worked as a scout and executive for the Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Dodgers, Cleveland Guardians, and most recently the Kansas City Royals. He was with the Royals before his passing in 2025.

Roy Clark's contributions to baseball will not be forgotten. He was credited with drafting or signing players such as Freddie Freeman, Craig Kimbrel, and Adam Wainwright, among others, for the Atlanta Braves. His legacy will live on in the many players he helped shape and the teams he impacted.
