Taylor Swift reportedly gets married: Is it significant or just a celebrity gossip?

In a recent survey conducted by YouGov, 4,194 individuals aged 18 and over in Germany were polled on August 28, 2025, as part of the "YouGov Question of the Day". The results shed light on the nation's views on engagements and their public announcements on social media channels.

The survey revealed that 63% of respondents consider engagements relevant today, while 21% do not find them relevant. Interestingly, 17% did not provide an answer or had no opinion.

One of the key findings was that a majority (52%) of respondents either fully or somewhat reject the public announcement of engagements on social media channels. Conversely, only 5% fully support such announcements, with another 15% somewhat supporting them. A significant portion (29%) of respondents had no opinion or did not provide an answer regarding this matter.

Younger people (aged 18 to 24) tend to be more accepting of engagements, with 73% considering them relevant. There was no significant difference in opinion between women and men on the relevance of engagements.

The survey also found that in Germany, a couple is considered engaged once they have given each other an engagement promise, regardless of the form it takes. However, 36% of respondents do not consider a ring a must for an engagement, while 58% of those over 55 consider a ring a necessary symbol of an engagement.

Notable celebrity engagements and marriages have been making headlines recently. Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce publicly announced their engagement in late August 2025, with speculation about their wedding location including Germany. Selena Gomez made her engagement to Benny Blanco public on Instagram last year.

It's important to note that in Germany, there is no legal obligation to actually get married if a couple is engaged. If an engaged couple in Germany breaks up, they may be entitled to claim damages in certain cases, such as if they have made preparations for their planned married life.

The results of the YouGov survey were weighted and are representative of the German population aged 18 and over. The survey did not provide information on the opinions of German respondents regarding traditional engagement ring practices.

As celebrities like Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce continue to share their engagements and marriages with the world, it will be interesting to see how public opinion on the matter evolves in Germany and beyond.
