Taiwanese Youth Power Tsai Ing-wen's Landslide Re-election in Defense of Sovereignty

Taiwanese youth, inspired by Hong Kong protests, are rallying to safeguard their lifestyle and sovereignty. President Tsai Ing-wen's re-election, with a landslide 8.17 million votes, reflects this sentiment and her commitment to progressive social policies.

Tsai's DPP campaign capitalized on the fear of losing Taiwanese sovereignty, fueled by Xi Jinping and Carrie Lam's actions in Hong Kong. Taiwanese voters, particularly the youth, appreciated Tsai's support for pension reform, minimum wage increase, and same-sex marriage legalization. They also recognized the KMT's pro-China stance as a threat to the Republic of China (ROC), with Beijing acknowledging only one China under the Communist Party of China (CCP).

Han Guo-yu's offensive remarks further alienated voters, contributing to Tsai's victory. Taiwanese prefer the current de-facto independent status over the KMT's mainland recapture dream. The DPP's diverse and inclusive legislative candidate list also resonated with voters, unlike the KMT's Beijing-influenced line-up, dominated by figures like Johnny Chiang and Eric Chu who advocate for cautious cross-strait relations.

Tsai Ing-wen's re-election, driven by Taiwanese youth and their desire for sovereignty, signals a rejection of Beijing's 'One Country, Two Systems' framework. Her victory, linked to Hong Kong protests, underscores regional resistance to Beijing's political encroachment.
