Switzerland and China Strengthen Ties in Landmark Strategic Dialogue

Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met this week to reinforce ties between their nations. The discussions took place during the fourth Strategic Dialogue, marking 75 years of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and China.

The two ministers agreed to deepen cooperation and update their existing free trade agreement. Since the original deal in 2013, bilateral trade has expanded significantly, with China now ranking among Switzerland's most important trading partners. Cassis noted that negotiations for a revised agreement are underway, with plans to address modern economic challenges and market access issues. Concrete results are expected by early next year.

Wang also announced new steps to ease travel restrictions for Swiss visitors and encourage greater cultural exchange. Beyond trade, he called for a lasting ceasefire in the Middle East and urged respect for Palestinian self-determination through a two-state solution. Both officials criticised rising protectionism and hegemonic tendencies in global politics, reaffirming their support for multilateral cooperation. The talks coincided with the 75th anniversary of Swiss-Chinese diplomatic relations, highlighting the long-standing partnership between the two countries. Despite global tensions, economic ties have continued to grow, though specific data on recent investments or technology transfers remains limited.

The meeting concluded with both sides expressing optimism about the future of their free trade agreement. Switzerland and China plan to finalise updates by 2026, addressing geopolitical shifts while maintaining strong economic links. The ministers also reaffirmed their shared commitment to tackling international challenges through joint efforts.
