Swiss hunting horn event sparks tradition vs. ethics debate amid Eurovision buzz
With primitive and unfamiliar sounds, noise is set to ring out on May 17th in the canton of Aargau, in the city of Baden, as part of the 1st Aargau Hunting Horn Blowing Event. Meanwhile, in Basel on the same day, the finale of the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 is taking place, a vision of peace through music. Around 200 hobby hunters are set to play at various locations in the city center of Baden before the ghost train meets for a final racket at the train station. Such events are hoped to attract new members to the sectarian and violent hunting associations, according to a statement. Hunting art is often compared to war art, with today's hobby hunter often seen as a tyrant, lazy, cowardly, and highly equipped with technology, sitting on a high seat or in cover. Yet, the hobby hunter supposedly longs for nature. But what kind of surreal nature has the hobby hunter created? Not closeness to nature, but distance and hostility, is what the hobby hunter lives and creates. This is the character and essence of hunting in the 21st century. Like military signal trumpets, the hunting horn is predominantly a variant of the natural trumpet with a very limited tonal range for the war music of hobby hunters. There are guiding signals like 'cock in peace, loud drive, silent drive', etc., and death signals like 'fox dead, deer dead, hare dead, sow dead', etc. Wild meat is a filler with very low frequency and not a food. In Canada, it is usually banned to sell wild meat from hobby hunters in restaurants or shops, as it is considered more of a poison than a food. Many authorities warn against wild meat. Accordingly, it shapes the consciousness of those who consume it and is visible in their activities and forms. Hobby hunters live off meat. Therefore, they are violent and aggressive. This is not strange, but quite natural. If one lives off killing, one has no respect for life. One is hostile towards life. That's why most animal species are shot for fun by hobby hunters, even though there is no sensible reason for it according to scientific studies. Hobby hunters spread unspeakable suffering, terror, and misery among both humans and wild animals. Practically everything that is cruel, unnecessary, and heartless is supported by hunting associations, as recently confirmed by a court in Bellinzona. In the canton of Aargau, it is especially the cruel driving hunts. Due to hobby hunters, wild animals suffer. Not infrequently, hobby hunters also turn their weapons on humans. According to studies, hobby hunters even spread diseases. * Hunters spread diseases * Hobby hunting promotes diseases Hobby hunters struggle to explain themselves in an enlightened society. They are insufficiently or not at all professionally trained. And so, most hunting license holders waddle through nature with the following attitude: * Predatory animals must be killed * Wild animals are fruit, just waiting to be harvested * Ecology is: poisoning the ground, groundwater, and wild animals with ammunition * Making as much noise as possible in the forest * Fur is fashion * Meat consumption is healthy and innate to humans * Hunting and animal cruelty are animal protection * Alcohol and other drugs belong to the fun at the rifle * Hunters' tales are science * Hunting is a deep meditation * Killing is a commandment of Moses * Hunters are the advocates for wild animals * Hunting horn sounds are mystical music * etc. So, whoever gets a hunting license always gets two things: a license to kill and a license to be stupid. **'Waidgerecht'** has nothing to do with animal protection. The fairness of hobby hunters contradicts the Animal Protection Act. 'Waidgerecht' is about as far from the Animal Protection Act as a cow is from riding a bike. Today's hobby hunting is essentially criminal. However, our legal system has not yet progressed to the point of considering this in criminal law.
Hunting horn events and Hubertus masses, primarily organized and attended by hobby hunters, are not compatible with the Christian ethics of respect for life. They often mark the beginning of particularly cruel driven and special hunts, where hobby hunters brutally chase and injure countless wild animals through the forests. Historically, hunting for population control was not hunting, but terrorist zooicide.
According to the Veterinary Association for Animal Protection, up to two-thirds of wild animals do not die immediately during driven hunts. With shattered bones and hanging entrails, the animals flee, suffer from their injuries for days, and die a painful death if they are not found during the so-called search.
Hobby hunters practice speciesism. Speciesism is comparable to racism and sexism, and it is not a matter of culture or tradition.
The event in Baden is disputed by groups from Aargau, including Distellaub Aarau, Freiwild Wiggertal, Fricktaler Jagdhornbläser, Jagdhornbläser Hallwyl, Jagdhornbläser SonatES, and Zurzibieter Jagdhornbläser. The Aargau groups receive support from guest groups such as JHB Buechholz, Jagdhornbläser Ergolz from Basel-Landschaft, Fricker Fßchse, and Jagdhornbläser Edelweiss from Glarus. The event gains internationality from the Princely Hunting Horn Group Liechtenstein and the Hunting Horn Group Tiengen from the neighboring German region.
