Swimmer Kai Richter from Triathlon Team Ratingen 08 competes a 10-kilometer swim at Ultrashwim Münster
In the heart of Münster, the harbor basin was transformed into a bustling aquatic arena for the annual Ultra Swimming Event. Among the participants was Kai, who, despite a setback, was determined to make his mark.
Initially, Kai had planned to compete in the middle distance at the Ironman in Duisburg in 2025. However, a torn inner meniscus forced him to stop running, compelling him to reconsider his goals. Instead, he found himself preparing for the 10-kilometer swimming event at the Ultra Swimming Event in Münster.
Guided by his coach, Peter Gnau, Kai honed his swimming skills to tackle the challenging course. The course, a 500-meter long turnaround, was filled with spectators, food stalls, and a unique atmosphere that added to the excitement of the event.
Kai was not alone in his endeavour. Victoria from his training group agreed to accompany him for the first four kilometers of the swim. The short-distance swimmers (1 and 2 kilometers) created a sense of activity and excitement, setting the tone for the event.
The event attracted a mixed field of swimmers, triathletes, and recreational athletes. The flipper swimmers, known for their speed and turbulence, were compared to a washing machine on spin cycle. Despite the competition, Kai's focus was on the experience and the story afterward, rather than for competition or recognition.
Kai's swimming style was compared to a "moving van," suggesting consistency and precision. He aimed to complete the 10-kilometer swim in under 4 hours, with a target time of 3:30:00. Refreshments were available at the flower box at the bulkhead, offering a welcome boost of energy to the swimmers throughout the event.
The organization of the event was taken over by the club DJK SG Gremmendorf 1921 e.V. The event was organized by TriFinish Münster e.V., a club with experience and passion, ensuring a well-managed and enjoyable experience for all participants.
On the day of the event, Kai achieved his goal of completing the 10-kilometer swim. Although he narrowly missed his target time, his determination and perseverance were evident. Kai has expressed his intention to return to Münster for future events, eager to take on the challenge once more.
The Ultra Swimming Event in Münster continues to attract participants from all over, offering a unique and challenging swimming experience. For Kai, it was not just a race, but a personal journey of resilience and determination.
