Swedish Center-Right Party Leader Söder Presents a Ten-Point Agenda to Bolster Automotive Industries - Swedish Center Party Leader Söder Outlines 10-Point Agenda to Bolster Automakers
In an effort to bolster the struggling automotive industry in Germany, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz has announced a future dialogue with key stakeholders. The dialogue, scheduled for September 20, 2025, aims to address the challenges posed by U.S. tariffs, EU bureaucratic restrictions, over-regulation, and technological one-sidedness, which CSU leader Markus Söder has expressed concern about.
Söder, who leads the CSU party, has also presented a 10-point plan to support car manufacturers. He believes that the internal combustion engine has a future with e-fuels and new technologies, and the plan aims to ensure its continuation.
Söder emphasized that the car industry is crucial for Germany's economy, and without it, there's a risk of economic collapse. He proposed strengthening the supply industry as a means to support the car industry, and expanding charging infrastructure as a necessary step. He also highlighted reducing driving license costs and CO2 reduction targets as further points.
In addition, Söder discussed developing autonomous driving as part of the plan. He believes that Germany needs a clear, pragmatic, forward-looking, and technologically realistic automotive strategy.
Merz, in his announcement, also mentioned that the supplier industry, several federal states, and trade unions would be invited to the dialogue. He stated that the dialogue would focus on finding solutions to help the industry adapt to the EU's 2035 ban on internal combustion engines, which poses a threat to hundreds of thousands of jobs in Germany.
The automotive industry is being weakened in Germany while other countries are catching up or pulling ahead. Söder's concerns are shared by many, as the industry's decline could have serious consequences for the country's economy. The dialogue and the CSU's 10-point plan are seen as important steps towards securing the future of the automotive industry in Germany.
