Sweden's strategy for tightening immigration policies surpasses Denmark's approach.
In a significant shift for Sweden, the new Migration Minister, Johan Forssell, has laid down a new marker for immigration policies. Forssell, who has expressed admiration for Sweden's tougher immigration policies as outlined in the Tidö Agreement, aims to work with Denmark at the EU level to get Syria on board with accepting any citizens deported from Sweden.
Approximately 20,000 Syrians living in Sweden do not have Swedish citizenship, and Forssell is eager for them to return to a post-Assad Syria. He has introduced many new laws and stricter measures related to migration, including measures affecting deportations and legal criteria for residence. However, there is no direct evidence that he was involved in such agencies before or had made such plans explicitly in preparation for his new role.
Meanwhile, the Sweden Democrats, a political party with roots in the Nazi movement, have been embroiled in controversy. Their social policy spokesperson, Jessica Stegrud, made headlines over comments she made about Sweden's new cultural canon. Stegrud's comments were in reference to Sweden's culture minister, Parisa Liljestrand, and the Social Democrats' culture policy spokesperson, Lawen Redar.
Liljestrand, born in Sweden and considering it her home country, was understandably concerned over Stegrud's comments. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson also expressed concern and asked for clarification. In response, Stegrud claimed that no one understood what she meant.
The comments made by Stegrud were not met with approval from all quarters. The Liberal Party's new leader, Simona Mohamsson, criticized Stegrud's comments. Lawen Redar, a member of the Social Democrats, also criticized Stegrud's comments and stated that the Sweden Democrats haven't changed. Annika Hirvonen, the Green Party's migration policy spokesperson, stated that Sweden is "very quickly racing to the bottom on immigration."
It's important to note that a clause in the Tidö Agreement requires representatives to treat each other with dignity and respect. Forssell, as the migration minister, has stated that Sweden will soon be less lenient than Denmark towards foreigners who commit crimes, leading to a likely sixfold increase in deportations.
This new approach to immigration policies is a significant shift for Sweden, and the implications are likely to be far-reaching. As the situation unfolds, it will be interesting to see how these policies are implemented and how they are received by the public.
