In a significant move, the Royal Thai Air Force has signed an agreement for the procurement of new Gripen E/F fighter jets from Sweden. The signing ceremony took place in Stockholm, Sweden, and was witnessed by Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa.

The agreement, which includes the purchase of four aircraft, is valued at 19.5 billion baht. This marks a new chapter in the bilateral relations between Thailand and Sweden, as the two countries have recently elevated their partnership to a strategic level.

However, the deal has not been without controversy. An open letter from the Cambodia Development Centre, dated August 1, has expressed concern over the arms export to conflict zones. The letter refers to the July clashes near the Preah Vihear temple and Thai air strikes targeting Cambodian communities.

The criticism cites the open letter and urges Sweden to review its arms exports in light of international law and regional stability. However, Sweden has expressed respect for Thailand's decisions to carry out defence operations, affirming that the use of the Gripens is in line with international law.

Thailand's military insists that its recent air operations strictly targeted Cambodian military installations. The Thai minister who defended Sweden's involvement in the delivery of Gripen fighter jets to the Royal Thai Air Force is Don Pramudwinai.

As the border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia persist, Asean observers are hoped to step in as mediators. Mr. Jonson, from Sweden, also expressed hope for both countries to defuse tensions and work towards a peaceful resolution.

The local media outlet Cambodianness.com has reported on the criticism of the Thailand-Sweden deal. As the situation continues to unfold, both countries will need to navigate this complex geopolitical landscape with care and diplomacy.
