Swapped my Ford F-150 for a 2022 Tesla Model 3, now logging more miles than ever. Previously gas-guzzling road trips that set me back $500 are now merely $250 in electrical charging costs.
Tesla Model 3 Owners Share Positive Long-Distance Driving Experiences
In recent weeks, several Tesla Model 3 owners have shared their positive experiences with long-distance driving, highlighting the convenience and cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles (EVs).
Dillan Ellison, a member of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y Owners Club on Facebook, purchased a 2022 Model 3 a couple of weeks ago. After trading in his Ford F-150, Ellison has experienced no maintenance issues with his new Tesla and has been excited about running it and beating on it. His previous car had a transmission that needed rebuilding and got 13 miles per gallon, compared to the lower fuel costs with his new EV.
Ellison's East Coast road trips, previously costing around $500 in gas, were significantly reduced in cost with his new Tesla Model 3. He traveled from New Jersey to West Virginia and from New Jersey to Georgia, with approximately $250 in charging costs for the entire trip.
Tom Foil, another member of the Tesla Owners Club, traded in a 2014 F-150 with 188k miles and never looked back after purchasing a 2022 Model 3.
The Tesla Supercharger network, with over 40,000 stalls globally, plays a crucial role in these long-distance journeys. V3 Superchargers can deliver up to 250 kW, adding roughly 180 miles in 15 minutes. These stations are located along major highways and urban hubs, integrated into navigation, and offer real-time stall availability to drivers.
Noah Washington, an automotive journalist based in Atlanta, Georgia, has been involved in the automotive industry since he was 15 years old and whose work has appeared on well-known automotive news websites. Washington enjoys covering the latest news in the automotive industry and conducting reviews on the latest cars.
Washington shared that Samantha Crowe, another Tesla Model 3 owner, had a 2021 Kia and was spending a lot of money on repairs, gas, and maintenance, but her new electric car has been a pleasure to drive with no anxiety about breakdowns.
However, not everyone has made the transition to electric vehicles yet. Diana Jacobs, a homeowner, still maintains her F-150 due to range anxiety when driving from Virginia to Illinois.
The Tesla Model 3 offers EPA-rated ranges from 220 mi (Std. Range RWD) to 358 mi (Long Range AWD), depending on the trim. At home, AC charging for the Tesla Model 3 supports up to 11.5 kW (on single-phase or three-phase setups). Onboard charger efficiency for the Tesla Model 3 can provide ~39-44 mi of range per hour when at 240 V/48 A, but slower at 240 V/32 A, around 26-32 mi per hour.
Thanks to the NACS connector rollout, access to the Tesla Supercharger network is expanding, now shared with GM EVs like the Equinox, increasing network density. This expansion will likely alleviate range anxiety for more electric vehicle drivers and encourage more people to make the switch to electric vehicles.
