In a significant step towards justice, an 84-year-old man named Michael Campbell was sentenced to nine years in prison for serious sexual assaults against two children. This landmark case marked the first time pre-recorded cross-examination was used in a court in Jersey, aiming to reduce trauma for vulnerable witnesses.

The victims, who bravely came forward to report the abuse, were supported throughout the justice process. From the initial reporting of the assaults, due to the vigilance of school staff, to the final sentencing, the victims received care, protection, and dignity. This support was provided not only by the States of Jersey Police but also by a network of partner agencies, including Jersey Domestic Abuse Support, Jersey Action Against Rape, and Dewberry House.

The collaboration between these agencies ensured a coordinated response from the outset, thanks to the referral through the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub. A dedicated witness care officer was assigned to ensure the victims and their family were kept informed and supported at every stage. This support was available not only during and after any police investigation or court hearing but also when police were not involved.

The two periods of offending by Campbell, separated by nearly 40 years, had a deep psychological impact on both victims. However, their courage and strength in speaking out about the abuse have led to the truth being brought to open debate, helping to convict Campbell and sentence him to prison.

The victims in this case, and all those who have been affected by such crimes, are commended for their bravery. It is crucial that they receive the support they need, and the States of Jersey Police and its partner agencies are committed to providing this support before, during, and after any police investigation or court hearing.
