Survivors of Epstein urge Congress to take action as pressure for revelation escalates
In a bid to ensure that abusers like Jeffrey Epstein are not let off lightly, survivors of his sexual exploitation have spoken out, hoping to spur lawmakers and federal officials into action.
One of these survivors, Chauntae Davies, recalled feeling powerless when she saw Epstein's connections to powerful people, including former President Donald Trump. Davies travelled to Africa with Epstein, Clinton, and other notable figures.
Virginia Giuffre's memoir is set to be released posthumously following her hospitalization and death. The survivors are compiling a list of people who may have been involved in Epstein's behaviour, but are still deliberating whether to release it publicly due to potential repercussions.
Bradley Edwards, an attorney representing survivors, has stated that Epstein personally abused women and farmed some of them out to his friends, but not all of them. Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein's ex, was charged in 2019 and was sentenced in 2022 in New York to 20 years in prison for her central role in operating a ring for the sexual exploitation of underage girls. Maxwell, however, told the DOJ she did not see Trump act in an inappropriate way.
Rep. Thomas Massie is pressing for a bill that would release DOJ files on Epstein, but needs at least two more Republicans to support him to force a vote. The bill would need support from six GOP members, all House Democrats, to pass the House, and then the Senate and President Trump's signature.
However, the White House has warned House members that supporting the bill would be seen as a hostile act. This warning has not deterred Massie, who continues to push for transparency and justice for the victims of Epstein's abuse.
The survivors' calls for action echo a broader demand for accountability in the face of powerful figures accused of heinous crimes. As the bill gains momentum, the focus remains on ensuring that those who have suffered at the hands of abusers like Epstein are heard and that justice is served.
