Max Verstappen Aims to Break Four-Race Podium Drought at Zandvoort

Max Verstappen will start the Formula 1 Grand Prix at his home circuit, Zandvoort, from the third position on the grid. The Red Bull driver had an unexpected improvement in qualifying, closing in on pole-sitter Oscar Piastri by a tenth of a second in sector 2.

Verstappen's qualifying performance was not foreseeable after he classified almost a second behind McLaren's Lando Norris in the third practice session. The Dutch driver struggled with finding grip and overall balance during the weekend, but made the right adjustments regarding the set-up direction for the qualifying.

Despite his improved feeling in qualifying, Verstappen is still cautious about the race pace of the RB21. In this season, the race pace has generally not been as good as the qualifying pace. However, he is more optimistic compared to Friday, especially in the middle sector of the track where he significantly improved.

Between Tarzan and Hugenholtzbocht, Verstappen struggled to make up the deficit on the rest of the lap during practice sessions. But in qualifying, he managed to close the gap, potentially providing some protection against drivers like George Russell who qualified between Verstappen and Isaac Hadjar of Racing Bull. Hadjar's qualifying position could potentially provide some defensive assistance for Verstappen in the race.

Red Bull could employ tactical measures like quick pit stops, strategic radio management to avoid penalties, and hard defence of the leading position to control the race and respond to potential incidents like competitor errors.

McLaren can only lose through bad luck or by beating themselves in the race, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in the first two positions. Verstappen's goal for Sunday's race is not the victory, but to end a negative streak of not being on the podium for four races.

Verstappen hopes to keep the drivers who start behind him behind him in the race. If he can maintain his position and avoid any mishaps, the Dutch driver might just break his four-race podium drought at his home race.
