Super Bowl ad ignites AI trust crisis between Anthropic and OpenAI

A Super Bowl ad by Anthropic has sparked controversy in the AI industry. The commercial targeted OpenAI's ChatGPT, raising concerns about the trustworthiness of its responses. The dispute has now drawn in high-profile critics and put OpenAI's reputation at risk.

The ad, which aired on February 9, 2026, questioned whether ChatGPT's answers could be influenced by advertisers. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, quickly responded—but his defence was met with scepticism.

Anthropic, the company behind the Claude AI, used its Super Bowl spot to cast doubt on ChatGPT's integrity. The ad played on fears that OpenAI's plan to introduce ads inside ChatGPT could compromise the accuracy of its responses. Marketing professor Scott Galloway called the move a 'seminal moment' in the AI wars, warning of lasting damage to OpenAI's brand.

Altman fired back on social media, labelling the ad 'dishonest' and 'deceptive'. However, critics argued his response only made Anthropic look like a serious competitor. Instead of addressing the concerns, OpenAI went ahead with ad testing in the US the very next day, on February 10, 2026. The ads appeared in both the free version of ChatGPT and the 'ChatGPT Go' subscription plan.

The ad's impact hinged on the close relationship users have with AI chatbots. By suggesting that advertisers might sway ChatGPT's answers, Anthropic exploited a key vulnerability: trust. Some analysts now warn that the fallout could extend beyond OpenAI, eroding public confidence in AI-generated answers altogether.

Despite calls for OpenAI to reverse its ad strategy and issue an apology, the company has taken no visible steps to alter its plans. The lack of action has left users and industry observers questioning whether OpenAI is prioritising revenue over reliability.

The controversy has left OpenAI in a difficult position. If trust in ChatGPT declines, the company could face serious consequences—particularly if users switch to rivals like Claude. For now, OpenAI continues testing ads, while the debate over AI integrity plays out in public.

Anthropic's ad has already achieved its goal: forcing a conversation about the risks of mixing advertising with AI responses. The long-term effects on OpenAI's user base remain to be seen.
