Sundance Film Festival closes its final chapter in Park City after 40 years

The Sundance Film Festival has wrapped up its final event in Park City, Utah, after 40 years. Tens of thousands of visitors filled restaurants and slowed local transport, leaving a lasting impression on the town. This year's programme included powerful documentaries and community projects tackling urgent environmental issues.

The festival drew huge crowds, packing restaurants to full capacity. Bus journeys that normally take nine minutes stretched to 40 due to heavy traffic. Film screenings sold out completely, with only a handful of waitlist spots left.

Among the standout films was *The Lake*, a documentary highlighting the crisis of the drying Great Salt Lake. Another notable feature, *Iinniiwa: The Blackfeet Buffalo Story*, explored the rewilding of buffalo on sacred Blackfeet land. The Great Salt Lake Hopeline project, showcased at Sundance in 2024, has spent two years raising awareness about the lake's decline. Since its launch, the initiative has introduced a 24/7 crisis hotline for mental health support, community education drives, and advocacy for stricter water conservation laws in Utah. Attendees also gathered at the Impact Lounge, a space designed for meaningful discussions on festival themes. The lounge encouraged visitors to reflect on their experiences and take action. As the event closed, many left with sadness, knowing it was the last Sundance in Utah. The festival's move to Boulder, Colorado, follows growing complaints from Park City residents about overcrowding and disruption.

The 2026 Sundance Film Festival marked the end of an era for Park City. With packed venues, sold-out screenings, and urgent environmental films, the event left a strong impact. Next year, the festival will begin a new chapter in Boulder, leaving behind four decades of history in Utah.
