Summer's second heatwave arrives on August 3, set to shatter temperature records
The mercury is set to rise as Spain prepares for its second heatwave of the summer, with temperatures expected to soar above average in the coming days.
According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the heatwave is expected to consolidate on August 3 and could extend until at least August 7. The northern third of the peninsula, particularly, is likely to experience significant temperature increases from Wednesday, August 6.
The weather forecast indicates that around mid-August, temperatures in areas covered by AEMET could range broadly, with sunny to partly cloudy skies. Regional heat warnings have been issued, especially in southern Spain such as Málaga, where temperatures could reach up to 39°C shortly after August 7. For precise conditions on August 7th, it is recommended to consult the official AEMET forecast for that specific date and location.
Temperatures in large areas of the central and southern peninsula, as well as around the Mediterranean coast, are not expected to drop below 23-25°C. The heatwave is predicted to break all temperature records, with temperatures during the second heatwave exceeding 40-42°C in valleys in the south of the Atlantic slope, such as the Guadalquivir and Guadiana.
The rest of the Peninsula will experience slight variations, maintaining abnormally high values for the season. Nighttime temperatures are also expected to be significant in the coming days.
AEMET warns of intervals of strong wind with probable very strong gusts in the Strait and on the northwestern Galician coasts. Occasional showers are expected in eastern Catalonia.
The Canary Islands could see an upward trend in temperatures from Monday, August 4, but it is not expected that the archipelago will meet the heatwave criterion.
Meanwhile, the heatwave is affecting the southern half of the Atlantic slope, southern Galicia, western Castilla and León, and points in Alborán. The new heatwave could become a notable novelty in these summer days, and the worst of the heatwave could be about to arrive.
It is advisable to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, and check the official AEMET forecast regularly for updates on the heatwave conditions.
