Summer temperatures might align with your assumptions: 'Hot Summer' could be an accurate description
Meteorologist Crawford Luke has observed a notable trend this summer, with fewer days experiencing soaring temperatures compared to the last four years. This cooler trend, according to Luke, is not just a local phenomenon but a broader trend across Canada.
In Saskatoon, there have been only 6 days over 30 degrees in 2025, a significant decrease from the 32 days recorded in 2021. Regina, too, has seen a decrease, with 9 days over 30 degrees in 2025, compared to 33 in 2021.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has also confirmed this summer's relatively cool climate compared to recent years. Luke attributes this cooler temperature to low pressure, which has kept temperatures about half a degree cooler on average in July and August.
However, the cooler temperatures have had varying effects on businesses. Petro Skirchuk, co-owner of Bus Stop Refreshments, has reported that business is doing well despite the cooler and rainy summer. Customers like the changes at Bus Stop Refreshments, even though the summer has been cooler and rainier than usual.
On the other hand, Paola Chiste, owner of Beppi's Gelato, has reported that business has been sporadic this summer. There have been very slow days and also incredibly busy days at Beppi's Gelato this summer.
The forecast may show signs of improvement, but it does not specify if this will significantly change the overall cooler trend of the summer. Environment Canada anticipates a slight improvement in weather for the rest of August and into September. Luke predicts that we could still see warm temperatures, potentially reaching 30 degrees, before the end of summer.
Wildfires have also been a factor in the cooler temperatures, according to Luke. Thick smoke from wildfires can sometimes suppress temperatures, offering a temporary relief from the heat.
Despite the mixed bag of weather and business, the owners of Bus Stop Refreshments remain optimistic about their business. Enna Ometlic and her friends are enjoying gelato, stating that such warm days have been rare this summer. Ometlic also mentioned that she recently visited Vancouver, where she experienced sunny weather every day, in contrast to the rainy and stormy weather in Saskatchewan upon her return.
In conclusion, this summer in Saskatchewan has been relatively cooler compared to recent years, offering a unique set of challenges and opportunities for businesses and weather enthusiasts alike.
