Submerged salvage mission involves state archaeologist - Submarine recoveral led by German archaeologist labeled "Inconsistent Retrieval"
The German U-boat U16, a known artifact among military collectors and U-boat enthusiasts, has been salvaged from the North Sea off the island of Scharhorn. However, the operation, carried out in Hamburg's territorial waters, has been met with criticism from Hamburg's state archaeologist, Rainer-Maria Weiss.
In a LinkedIn post, the Federal Office for Maritime and Hydrography (BSH) defended the salvage operation, but Weiss criticised it as "clumsy" and an "illegal hasty operation." The BSH reported that images from an echo sounder showed water-filled depressions, which were one of the reasons for frequent examinations of the wreck, including in 2023.
During the operation, the U-boat broke into two pieces overnight on Monday. One part of the wreck could have been lifted if the other side had tilted during the salvage operation. Under normal conditions and professional supervision, U-boat U16 would not have broken. Weiss expressed concern over a "gross disregard for any regulations" in the operation.
Rainer-Maria Weiss, who is responsible for all underwater monuments around Scharhorn, finds it extraordinary that a known, identified U-boat was simply pulled up during the salvage operation. He learned about the action from the newspaper. The German Press Agency is not mentioned as providing any justification for the BSH's actions in the U-boat U16 salvage operation.
Despite the controversy, Weiss stated that the salvaged U-boat half appears to be in excellent condition. He believes that the wreck will not rust away quickly. However, he sees a chain of oversights that led to the salvage operation. He criticised the operation, stating that the U-boat could have been left in place and slightly raised instead.
As of now, there is no verified publicly available information about who moved the submarine U16 from its position near Scharhorn in the North Sea in 2023 or who was responsible for any illegal urgent operation. The BSH has not provided any justification for their actions in the U-boat U16 salvage operation.
The U-boat U16, which sank in the North Sea off Scharhorn in 1919, is a significant part of German maritime history. Its salvage has ignited a debate about the importance of preserving historical artifacts and adhering to proper archaeological procedures. The controversy continues as both parties await further information and clarification on the salvage operation.
