Students gain practical exposure to the quantum realm: Christina Jörg awarded teaching prize from RPTU in Kaiserslautern (reworded)
Christina Jörg, a Junior Professor and physicist at Rheinland-Pfälzische Technical University Kaiserslautern-Landau (RPTU), has been awarded the Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA) for her exceptional commitment to academic teaching.
The DTA, initiated in 2014 at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, honours teachers who excel in the areas of teaching, examination, counselling, and student support. This year, Christina Jörg was nominated by her students, who appreciate her vivid teaching style, practical relevance, encouragement of active participation, and independent learning.
Jörg's lecture "Experimental Quantum Physics" starts from the basics and makes the subject tangible through experiments, helping students understand the subject even if it initially seems foreign or unfamiliar. She encourages active learning, using methods such as quiz questions, the "Inverted Classroom", and self-study videos followed by joint discussion.
In addition to traditional teaching methods, Jörg develops innovative teaching concepts that intertwine theory and practice and foster interdisciplinary skills. She uses new teaching formats to give students practical insights into research, such as laboratory exercises accompanying lectures where students create model systems and measure them.
The award also honours teachers who develop and successfully use innovative teaching and learning materials, such as e-teaching. Jörg's recent receipt of a "Fulbright-Cottrell Award" to further develop her practice-oriented teaching-learning concept is a testament to her innovative approach.
The prize will be presented to Christina Jörg by the Vice President for Teaching in Kaiserslautern, Dr. Stefan Löhrke, during the "Summer School on Studium and Teaching" on 29.08.2025. The Summer School takes place at RPTU, and more information can be found on the website www.rptu.de/s/summerschool.
For further information about the Distinguished Teaching Award or the Center for Innovation and Digitalization in Studies and Teaching (ZIDiS), please contact Hannelore König at [email protected]. Christine Pauli, Referent for Science Communication at RPTU, can be reached at [email protected].
The DTA is endowed with 10,000 euros and is presented to individuals who are particularly committed to teaching, testing, advising, and mentoring. The commitment can relate to the conception and implementation of innovative study elements.
The award ceremony will be a celebration of Christina Jörg's dedication to fostering a love for experimental quantum physics in her students and her innovative teaching methods that make complex subjects accessible and engaging.
