Struggling with alcohol dependency - Struggling with alcohol addiction
Schlager star Ben Zucker has revealed his long-standing battle with alcohol addiction in his upcoming autobiography, "Fighter's Heart," set to be released on September 10.
The book, which details Zucker's personal struggles, sheds light on the gradual onset of his addiction problem. It began as a coping mechanism for performance anxiety and growing pressure after his mid-thirties breakthrough. What started harmlessly developed into a daily consumption of alcohol as a means to cope with professional pressure.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Zucker's situation worsened significantly due to tour cancellations and social isolation, leading him to a destructive routine of constant intoxication. He openly admits to consuming a whole bottle of vodka daily, often starting as early as midday, and maintaining a constant level of intoxication.
Zucker's mother, Christine, was aware of the situation and was very worried, but knew that reproaches wouldn't help. His then-partner tried to help him, but couldn't overcome the power of the addiction, which may have contributed to the failure of the relationship.
The turning point for Zucker came in the shower when he noticed his physical condition, including a weight gain of at least 15 kilograms and a loss of self-respect. After this realization, Zucker sought professional help in the autumn of 2024. He completed a 21-day therapy program in a specialized clinic, participating in intensive individual and group therapy sessions to learn how to manage his addiction.
In his autobiography and an interview with the "Bild" newspaper, Zucker discusses his insights into dealing with his illness and understanding the underlying mechanisms of his addiction. He emphasizes that help begins with honesty, and his open confession of alcoholism contributes to the destigmatization of addiction.
Despite his ongoing struggle, Zucker continues to drink but emphasizes that he could also say he is an alcoholic. His bravery in sharing his story is expected to inspire many who are struggling with similar issues.
