Struggling SSV Jahn manages to keep the trophy at bay with a narrow victory
SSV Jahn Regensburg overcame a tough challenge from SpVgg Ansbach in the Toto Cup, securing their place in the quarter-finals following a thrilling penalty shootout.
The game, played at the Jahn Stadium, started off with a surprise as Eric Weeger of Ansbach scored in the 22nd minute, capitalising on a corner kick to take an early lead. However, Regensburg refused to be deterred.
Coach Michael Wimmer, who led the team to the quarter-finals, made several changes to the starting lineup, with Captain Christian Kühlwetter missing out due to an injury sustained during the warm-up, allowing Dejan Galjen to start. Despite the setback, Regensburg's resilience shone through.
Ansbach had opportunities to extend their lead but goalkeeper Felix Gebhardt kept Regensburg in the game with several impressive saves. The Regensburg goalkeeper was instrumental in the team's performance, saving two penalties during the shootout.
Regensburg's attack was not at their best, with Lucas Hermes absent due to injury. Nevertheless, they managed to force a draw, thanks to a late goal from Nicolas Oliveira in the 90+7 minute. An offside call prevented Oliveira from scoring in the dying moments of the game, sending the match into extra time.
The game ended in a 5:5 draw after regular and extra time, setting the stage for a dramatic penalty shootout. Regensburg won the shootout 4:2, with Gebhardt's penalty saves being crucial in their victory.
The fans expressed their frustration with the team's performance during the game, but the victory will undoubtedly boost their morale. Regensburg will host Essen at the Jahn Stadium next Friday, aiming to continue their cup run.
Despite the challenges faced, Regensburg showed great determination and resilience, demonstrating their potential as a formidable force in the Toto Cup.
