Struggling Egyptian soccer powerhouse Ahly dismiss Spanish coach Riveiro
Football Transfers and Updates Across Africa
Clatous Chama has made a move from Tanzanian champions Young Africans to Singida Black Stars, signing a one-year contract under the guidance of new coach Miguel Gamondi. The Tanzanian international aims to help Singida Black Stars challenge the dominance of Young Africans and Simba in the Tanzanian national league.
Meanwhile, in South Africa, the Spanish player Riveiro has found a new home after leaving Orlando Pirates when his contract expired last May. He has now joined Ahly, following a brief stint with SuperSport United in the 2022/23 season. Riveiro, a former Orlando Pirates coach, came to South Africa from Finland in 2022. However, his tenure at Ahly has been less successful, with only one win in seven competitive matches, leaving them 13th in the 21-club championship after five rounds.
In Egypt, Walid el Karti scored for CAF Champions League title-holders Pyramids, but his goal could not prevent Ahly from slipping further down the table. Elsewhere, Mohau Nkota made a dream debut in the Saudi Pro League, scoring after just seven minutes of his debut for Al Ettifaq. Nkota, who scored three times in away victories in the CAF Champions League last season, has now been included in the South Africa squad for World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria.
Denis Onyango has also returned to the international stage, having left Mamelodi Sundowns. The Ugandan goalkeeper will compete for a starting place with Nafian Alionzi, Salim Magoola, and Joel Mutakubwa at his new team. The Uganda national team, currently in fourth place, needs to win both upcoming qualifiers to catch up with leaders Algeria in Group G.
On a continental level, Morocco won the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), with Oussama Lamlioui of Morocco being the leading scorer of the tournament with six goals.
Finally, Singida Black Stars have set their sights on the CAF Confederation Cup group phase, aiming to eliminate Rayon Sports of Rwanda, Flambeau Centre of Burundi, or Al Akhdar of Libya to secure their place in the competition.
