Strong earthquake shakes Afghanistan once more

In a devastating turn of events, Afghanistan has been hit by another strong earthquake near Jalalabad. The earthquake, which occurred a few days after a previous devastating earthquake in the country, has left thousands of people affected and thousands of houses destroyed, according to various reports.

The magnitude of the earthquake, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), was 5.6. However, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam reported a magnitude of 6.3 for the same earthquake. The depth of the earthquake was reported as ten kilometers.

The ruling Taliban and the Afghan Red Crescent Society have provided the casualty and injury figures, stating that over 3,600 people have been injured in the earthquake, and the death toll has risen to around 2,200. Entire families have been buried under the rubble, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The city of Jalalabad felt the strongest aftershock following the earthquake. The aftershock had a magnitude of 5.2 and its epicenter was only a few kilometers from the epicenter of the main earthquake near Jalalabad in Nangarhar Province. The earthquake was followed by numerous aftershocks.

The exact locations of the affected areas are not specified beyond being in Afghanistan. The affected areas are difficult to access, hindering relief efforts and victim recovery. No specific information was provided about casualties or damages caused by the earthquake.

It's important to note that no information on casualties and damages from the recent tremors felt in India and Pakistan has been reported yet.

This latest earthquake in Afghanistan comes at a time when the country is still reeling from the aftermath of a previous earthquake. The first earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.0, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS), occurred a few days earlier and caused widespread destruction and loss of life.

The events serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by Afghanistan and the need for continued international support and aid.
