Exploring the Bear's Head in the Allgäu: A Scenic Autumn Hike

Embark on a captivating journey through the heart of the Allgäu region, as we guide you through the enchanting hike to the Bear's Head (Bearenkopf). This picturesque adventure offers a unique blend of forest trails, narrow pathways, and breathtaking views of nature's autumnal splendour.

The hike begins at the Gunzesried-Säge hiking parking lot, a paid area conveniently located near the starting points for local hikes. Alternatively, you can park at the Gemeinde Gunzesried parking lot, also a paid area, situated at Ostertal near Gunzesried-Säge.

Setting off on your adventure, you'll first cross a street before venturing onto a forest road that transforms into a hiking trail. As you progress, the path leads you through the Gunzesrieder Ach river and into the heart of the forest, where the first signs of autumn begin to reveal themselves.

The route from Gunzesried-Säge heads towards Steineberg, and as the elevation gradually increases, your fitness level will be put to the test. Climbing over 500 meters, you'll reach Vorderer Krumbach Alpe, where a short climb up a hillside awaits.

As you ascend, the landscape unfolds to reveal a symphony of colours - trees turning red, towering rock formations, and the Bear's Head, standing proudly at an elevation of 1476 meters. The summit cross at the Bear's Head serves as a poignant memorial site, steeped in history that you can learn more about here.

Remember to pack your own snacks for the journey, as many alpine huts may be closed during late summer. Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate gear, such as a rain jacket, to ensure you're well-prepared for the elements.

The hike to the Bear's Head is suitable for late summer when days are getting shorter, making it the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of autumn in the Allgäu. And for those seeking an alternative route, you can reach the Bear's Head by taking the train to Mittag and hiking from there in approximately 30 minutes.

Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just starting out, the Bear's Head hike offers a rewarding experience that promises to leave you with unforgettable memories of the Allgäu's natural wonders. So, lace up your boots, grab your gear, and prepare for an adventure that awaits!
