Strengthening exercises for hips, endorsed by experts, aimed at addressing persistent hip tightness permanently
Emma Burgon-Kisby, recently named "Therapist of the Year" in Lincolnshire, UK, shares her expertise on hip-strengthening exercises that can help improve your daily movements and overall fitness.
Knee tucks, a popular exercise among sports therapists, allow for working the hip joint and surrounding muscles through a large range of motion. By adding resistance, such as a resistance band, knee tucks can increase muscle strength, making functional daily movements easier.
Another exercise recommended by Burgon-Kisby is the Deadbug, which is excellent for strengthening and lengthening the hip flexors and deep core muscles. This exercise is a favourite of Burgon-Kisby, who has over a decade of experience as a sports therapist, strength and conditioning coach, and the founder of Lincs Injury Clinic.
Towel slides, another exercise recommended by Burgon-Kisby, targets the muscles responsible for straightening the leg at the knee and moving the leg behind. This exercise can help develop stability and control in these areas, improving posture and walking gait.
Knee lifts, performed by standing on a box and hooking a kettlebell to the shoe, can strengthen hip flexor muscles, improve their endurance and resilience under load, and improve posture and walking gait.
Focusing on strengthening the muscles surrounding the hips, rather than stretching them, can help undo the damage caused by spending most of the time sitting down. Strengthening other areas of the lower body, such as the glutes, can help fight the effects of sitting down all day.
It's worth noting that Kate O'Donnell, a sports therapist based in the United States, has shared four hip strengthening exercises for the hip flexors and supporting core muscles. These exercises, along with the ones recommended by Burgon-Kisby, can help improve your mobility, ease off back pain, hip pain, and knee pain, and maintain stability during squats and lunges.
Finally, Towel slides can be progressed or regressed, making it a great exercise for all abilities. So, whether you're a beginner or an experienced fitness enthusiast, these exercises can help you strengthen your hips and improve your daily movements.
