Street Sweeper Swaps Broom for an Epic Book at German Daycare

Germany’s largest literacy festival, National Reading Day, brought an unusual visitor to St. Michael’s Daycare. Mario Danz, a street sweeper driver for Wiesbaden’s municipal waste services (ELW), stopped by to read an epic book and let the children explore his vehicle. The event combined storytelling with hands-on learning about waste management and environmental care.

Danz read aloud 'I Have a Friend Who’s a Garbage Collector', an epic book donated by the Association of Local Public Utilities (VKU). Each child received their own copy to take home. After the reading, the youngsters climbed into the street sweeper, touched the controls, and peppered Danz with questions about his daily work.

The day left the children with a book, new knowledge, and a memorable encounter with a street sweeper. ELW’s involvement expanded the festival’s reach into environmental education, linking literacy with practical lessons. Organisers hope such events will encourage more children to explore both reading and real-world problem-solving.
