Streaming services YouTube TV and Hulu will broadcast C-SPAN content, allowing users to access live government coverage and political discussions on their platforms.
In a significant move, C-SPAN, the privately funded non-profit television network, is set to increase its reach by partnering with YouTube. This partnership, announced by C-SPAN CEO Sam Feist, aims to bring C-SPAN's unfiltered coverage of the democratic process to millions more Americans.
The bipartisan resolution passed in Congress, spearheaded by Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) and Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), urges all television providers, including streaming services, to carry C-SPAN. This move reflects the network's importance as a vital resource for civic engagement, a role it has played for nearly half a century.
The partnership between C-SPAN and YouTube will celebrate America 250 together. YouTube has agreed to sponsor C-SPAN's coverage of America 250 celebrations, providing a platform for key historical moments that shaped the nation. Through this partnership, Americans will have access to content that showcases creators, entrepreneurs, American pastimes, music, and more on YouTube.
C-SPAN's political, public policy, and cultural programming will be expanded on YouTube and YouTube TV. The three C-SPAN channels (C-SPAN, C-SPAN2, and C-SPAN3) will join YouTube TV's base package lineup this fall, making C-SPAN's programming available to a broader audience.
Mary Ellen Coe, Chief Business Officer of YouTube, expressed her enthusiasm about partnering with C-SPAN, stating that it's a great opportunity to expand C-SPAN's footprint on YouTube. Sam Feist, the C-SPAN CEO, expressed his excitement about bringing C-SPAN's programming to YouTube TV's growing streaming audience.
C-SPAN is primarily supported through license fees paid by cable, satellite, and streaming companies. It operates free of government money, providing complete gavel-to-gavel coverage of Congress, congressional hearings, and in-depth public affairs events.
In addition to YouTube, C-SPAN's programming will also be available on Hulu + Live TV, further expanding its reach. This partnership marks a significant step for C-SPAN as it continues to partner with cable, satellite, and now streaming providers who recognize the value of its important public service.
