Strategies for Undoing Learned Helplessness

The brain's remarkable ability to heal from emotional injury is known as neuroplasticity. This capacity is the foundation for a method called learned optimism, which offers a way to overcome feelings of helplessness that have become increasingly prevalent in today's society.

Feelings of helplessness are not always a result of depression, but rather a condition called learned helplessness. This state can develop due to toxic, abusive relationships, either in childhood or adulthood, or as a response to the angry and divisive political climate, more major natural disasters, and financial hardship since the 2008 recession.

Learned helplessness can lead to a loss of interest in previously enjoyed goals and activities. However, with practice and support, it is possible to think positively and overcome these feelings. The key to learning optimism is being mindful of negative emotions and changing the internal conversation to a more positive one.

Learned optimism is not about using positive affirmations to overcome difficult situations; it's about training the brain to see possibilities of good ahead. Instead of using stress or negative emotions as an excuse to give up, positive thinking moves people to discover new ways of dealing with stressors and steps to reach their goals.

The use of antidepressants has increased by 400% since 1988 and by 65% in the past 15 years. While these medications can provide temporary relief, they do not address the root cause of learned helplessness. Adult learned helplessness is a state where adults feel unable to change or control their situation due to repeated experiences of failure or stress. It can be overcome by strengthening self-regulation, developing new coping strategies, seeking supportive social connections, and creating rituals or practices that help regain agency and balance in life.

People are stronger than they think, and viewing life through more optimistic eyes is a key to living a happy, emotionally healthy existence. Attempting to think positively when a person feels so helpless may seem impossible, but with practice and support, it can be done successfully.

The rise of narcissism in relationships increases the likelihood of people ending up in toxic situations, further contributing to feelings of helplessness. However, understanding the concept of learned optimism and the power of positive thinking can provide a pathway to a happier, more fulfilling life.
