Stranded for two months, teen influencer Ethan Guo and the pilot departed from Antarctic air base
In a unique turn of events, 19-year-old social media influencer Ethan Guo has been released from detention in Chilean Antarctica, following a two-month stay at a local airbase.
Guo, who was attempting to become the youngest person to fly solo to all seven continents, found himself in hot water when he was initially charged for submitting a false flight plan. The young aviator had provided false data to Chilean authorities, which led to his brief arrest upon landing in Chile's Antarctic territory on June 28.
However, a Chilean judge later dropped the charges against Guo, following his lawyer, Jaime Barrientos' statement that Guo had received authorization from Chilean authorities. Despite the initial hiccup, Guo expressed gratitude towards the Chilean people for their hospitality and care during his stay.
During his two-month sojourn, Guo lived in the base with limited communications and freezing Antarctic winter temperatures plunging below zero. He was unable to fly his small plane during this period, but he did manage to learn Spanish, a skill that will undoubtedly come in handy in his future travels.
Upon his release and return to Punta Arenas aboard a navy ship, Guo donned a Chilean national soccer team jersey, a gesture of appreciation for the country that had hosted him during his difficult times. In a show of goodwill, Guo also donated $10,000 to the Red Cross and agreed to donate an additional $30,000 to a children's cancer foundation within 30 days.
Guo's detention was a "mundane" experience, he described, with "limited freedoms." Nonetheless, he maintained a positive attitude throughout his ordeal, expressing his eagerness to continue his journey and complete his quest to fly solo to all seven continents.
Despite the initial controversy, Guo's determination and resilience have earned him a place in the hearts of many, making his story one of adventure, perseverance, and the spirit of exploration.
