Starmer Delivers Sleaze Report on Underpaid Tax of Deputy PM; Rayner May Resign Over Incident
In a series of developments, the Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Angela Rayner, finds herself at the centre of a political storm.
Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour Party leader, has received the verdict of Sir Laurie Magnus' investigation into the Deputy Prime Minister. The investigation, a bombshell sleaze probe, has been shrouded in secrecy, but its conclusions could have significant implications for Rayner's future in the government.
The controversy surrounding Rayner escalated further with the emergence of a viral clip online. The clip, which has already garnered hundreds of thousands of views, criticises Rayner for tax avoidance and multiple home ownership. Graffiti outside her new seaside apartment building reads "tax exader" and "Rayner tax avoidance."
In response to the mounting pressure, Rayner sought new legal advice after days of speculation about her tax payments. However, the Housing Secretary, who has been embroiled in the scandal, suffered a setback as her solicitors accused Rayner of "scapegoating" them to defend her tax avoidance.
The PM has stated that he will wait for the report from the ethics adviser before deciding on Rayner's future. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch warned Sir Laurie to avoid any perceptions of a "whitewash" in his ethics report.
Meanwhile, Tories have attacked Sir Keir for not firing Rayner, labelling her a "hypocrite." The Tories' criticism comes as Douglas Alexander, Trade Minister, expressed support for Rayner and her background. Labour front benchers also defended Rayner's character amid the scandal on Friday morning.
The role of Deputy Labour Leader for Rayner is in question. If she were to resign, there is no information available about a potential candidate to replace her. However, Wes Streeting, Yvette Cooper, Pat McFadden, and Darren Jones are among the contenders.
Baroness Poppy Gustaffson, a key figure in the Labour Party, is expected to resign her role for unrelated reasons. The Ethics Adviser is expected to examine all material related to Rayner's Housing Department and any proposed property taxes.
The clip of Rayner shows her flashing cash, wearing a fur coat, smoking two cigarettes simultaneously, and dancing in the Commons hall. The incident, which has been widely condemned, has added fuel to the fire surrounding Rayner's behaviour.
As the investigation continues, the future of Angela Rayner in the Labour Party remains uncertain. The public awaits the report from Sir Laurie Magnus, which could provide clarity on the matter.
