Starlink Provides a Month of Complimentary Internet Service in an Attempt to Reclaim Previous Clients
SpaceX's satellite internet provider, Starlink, is offering a month of free service to former subscribers in Canada, the United States, Europe, and Australia. This move is part of Starlink's ongoing global expansion, aiming to win back skeptical users and serve customers in 150 countries worldwide.
In the past year, SpaceX has deployed over 2,300 additional satellites, boosting Starlink's overall capacity, speed, and reliability. This expansion has been instrumental in improving the service for travel, RV use, and seasonal living, making it a popular choice for some subscribers.
However, network congestion in crowded service zones has led to hefty congestion fees for some regions. To address this issue, Starlink has introduced advanced "beam switching" technology to help dishes perform better in environments with tree cover or other obstructions.
Starlink's main appeal lies in its high-speed connectivity, particularly in rural or underserved areas. The company's residential plan costs C$140/US$120 per month in Canada and the U.S., respectively, making it more expensive than many terrestrial internet options.
This is not the first time Starlink has offered incentives to grow its subscriber base. Over the summer, it introduced discounts on its standard dish kit and temporary price reductions for certain service tiers in select regions. The offer is valid until September 30, 2023, and only applies to service lines that received the official invitation email.
The expansion of Starlink in other countries is coordinated by business development teams within SpaceX. Business Development Managers execute strategies and partnerships regionally, such as for the US and Canada. The broader coordination is managed by SpaceX, Elon Musk's aerospace company that operates Starlink satellites.
As of July 2022, Starlink's U.S. user base has climbed above 2 million, up from 1.4 million a year earlier. Worldwide, Starlink now serves more than 7 million customers across 150 countries. Despite this growth, some users may cancel their Starlink service due to intermittent needs or cost or performance issues.
Nonetheless, Starlink's network improvements are intended to address these concerns and solidify its position as a leading satellite internet provider.
