Standoff in Historical Texas Village

In the heart of Spandau, Berlin, a unique standoff is unfolding. The replica Western village of Old Texas Town, spanning over 10,500 square meters, has become the centre of a dispute between its eccentric occupants and some rich out-of-towners who wish to turn the land into a data center.

August saw a sharp rise in visitor numbers to Old Texas Town, a testament to its charm and appeal. The village, complete with a saloon, bank, jail, church, antique pharmacy, wheelwright's workshop, and saddler's workshop, offers a glimpse into the Old West. However, this idyllic setting is now under threat.

On Friday, September 5, the lease for Old Texas Town expired, and the company planning to convert the land in Haselhorst, where the village stands, into a data center, WISTA-MANAGEMENT GMBH, ordered the occupants to leave. The cowboy enthusiasts, who have been occupying the site for 57 years, are refusing to budge.

The situation in Old Texas Town resembles an old Western plot. Despite questionable elements like visitors donning Native American dress or waving Confederate flags, the village seems hard to shake. The occupants, a group of old-timers, are planning a party this Saturday, a defiant move against the new owners.

The outcome of the standoff is uncertain. All that remains to be seen is whether the whole thing ends in a shootout, as it might in an old Western movie. An online petition to save Old Texas Town has already garnered over 10,000 signatures, indicating widespread public support for its preservation.

As the standoff continues, Old Texas Town stands as a symbol of nostalgia and resistance, a place where the Old West lives on, at least for now.
