Stable Internet Connection Established in Altmark Region: 'A Reliable Network is Essential for Everything'
In a significant development, the Altmark region in Germany has completed the broadband expansion project, marking the largest publicly funded broadband expansion area in the country. This ambitious project, spanning over 13 years of planning, has now brought the region's fiber-optic network on par with the best supply areas in Germany.
The responsible association for this project, Broadband Altmark, has overseen the construction of around 30,000 connections for private households, businesses, schools, and authorities. As a result, approximately 38 percent of households in the Altmark have already actively booked a fiber optic connection.
The project, funded with a total of 140 million euros from the federal and state governments, has connected three project areas in the Altmark region, including the districts of Stendal and Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, covering about 4,700 square kilometers. However, despite the completed expansion, there are still "grey spots" that need to be eliminated.
One such beneficiary of this digital advancement is Lucia Neuling, a business owner in Wallstawe near Salzwedel. Lucia uses the fast internet for her business and for communication with her family in the Republic of Moldova. Her story stands for many people in the Altmark, as the improved internet connection has become an important location factor for the region.
Axel Schulz, the first employee of the Altmark Broadband Association in 2015, initially faced a turbulent start. Today, he only accompanies the topic on a voluntary basis within the association's assembly. The region of Altmark has set a precedent, demonstrating that rural areas can keep up digitally, providing a significant advantage for new working models like home office or remote jobs.
This digital advancement is not just a numbers game; for people like Lucia Neuling, the improvement in daily life is noticeable. From streamlined business operations to seamless communication with loved ones abroad, the impact of this project is far-reaching and transformative. The Altmark region has truly demonstrated that digital progress is possible, even in rural areas.
