SPD proposes to host the student olympiad in North Rhine-Westphalia
The Rhine-Ruhr region is set to host the 2025 Summer Universiade, a grand sports festival that offers excellent opportunities for international understanding and collaboration among participating nations, as stated by Sonja Bongers, SPD state parliamentarian.
The Universiade, often referred to as the student Olympics, is the second-largest event of its kind globally, surpassed only by the Olympic Games. The 2025 event is expected to attract over 10,000 participants from approximately 150 nations, who will compete in 18 sports.
Elite athletes from around the world will gather in the Rhine-Ruhr region, a location familiar with hosting such events, as it was the site of the Universiade thirty years ago in Duisburg. The region has shown its ability to successfully organise and manage such a large-scale event, and the upcoming Universiade is no exception.
The Summer Universiade will not only be a significant sporting event but also a cultural one. A wide programme of events will accompany the games, offering visitors a taste of the local culture and traditions.
The event is expected to significantly benefit the local economy, generating substantial revenue and creating jobs. The SPD group in the Düsseldorf City Council, along with the CDU, FDP, and Bündnis 90/Die Grünen, have expressed their support for hosting the Summer Universiade in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) in 2025.
While the specific individual from the Düsseldorf city council and state parliament who has spoken in favour of the bid cannot be confirmed from the available data, it is clear that the Universiade in 2025 will be a high-level event that offers opportunities for universities from Germany and abroad to strengthen their collaborations, as stated by Sonja Bongers.
The Universiade promotes international understanding among participating nations, making it an ideal platform for fostering relationships and collaboration beyond the sports field. The event in 2025 promises to be an exciting and unforgettable experience for all involved.
