The political landscape of Germany is witnessing a significant shift, as the major parties, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), and its Bavarian sister party, the Christian Social Union of Bavaria (CSU), also known as "the Union," are set to form a new coalition government.

The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), one of the country's major parties, is currently in the process of voting on a coalition agreement for this new federal government. The leaders of the SPD are actively explaining why they find the agreement beneficial, hoping for a majority of votes in favour.

The CSU, while a German party, can only be voted for in the federal state of Bavaria. In the rest of Germany, the CSU works together with the CDU party. The leaders of the CSU have expressed their support for the coalition agreement, aligning with the SPD's vision.

The head of the German government is Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who will lead the Union in this new coalition.

Coalitions are formed when a party does not have a majority in a parliament and seeks one or more coalition partners. They signify a longer-term partnership, with the parties working together to determine the politics of the country.

The SPD's online vote on the coalition agreement is ongoing and will conclude by the end of April. The result will provide clarity on the future of this potential coalition. It's important to note that coalitions can break up if the parties no longer agree, leading to a possible new parliamentary election.

The CDU will soon convene its members from all federal states for an internal party meeting to discuss and vote on the coalition agreement. The date for this meeting has not been publicly announced yet.

In cases where parties form a coalition, the government is responsible for setting the politics of the country. The success of this new coalition will depend on the mutual understanding and agreement between the parties, ensuring a stable and effective government for Germany.
