In the world of cinema, the anticipation for the 2026 Oscars is building, and Spain has announced its contenders. Three films have been selected to represent the country: 'Romería', 'Sirat', and 'Sorda'.

'Romería', directed by Carla Simón, has already made its mark, passing through the official section of Cannes. The film is set to have its premiere at the New York International Film Festival and is expected to have international distribution. 'Romería' delves into the AIDS context, which is particular to Spain's heroin epidemic, promising a poignant and thought-provoking narrative.

'Sirat', produced by El Deseo, Pedro Almodóvar's production company, is another contender. Agustín Almodóvar, a key figure in the production, has stated that 'Sirat' could surprise the voters due to its radical nature. The film, which focuses on the relationship of a couple with one deaf partner and forming a family, has already secured distribution in the American market through Neon.

'Sorda', a debut film by Eva Libertad, has also been praised for its universal theme and emotional impact. The film, which passed through the Berlin Festival, tells the story of a deaf couple forming a family.

The Spanish nomination for the Oscar 2026 is chosen by the members of the Spanish film academy through a national selection process organized by the academy itself. It's important to note that 'The Captive' by Alejandro Amenábar is among the 57 feature films eligible to represent Spain at the Oscars, but it didn't convince its peers. Similarly, 'Maspalomas' by the Moriartys missed its trip to Hollywood.

Esther García, producer of 'Sirat', mentioned the need for a great investment and sacrifice to get Oscar nominations. This sentiment echoes the fact that it has been 21 years since Spanish cinema last won the Oscar for Best International Film, with 'The Sea Inside' taking the prize in 1999.

As the countdown to the 2026 Oscars begins, the competition is fierce, but 'Sirat' seems to be the favorite for the international category. With its unique themes, powerful storytelling, and international distribution, 'Sirat' promises to make a lasting impact on the global cinema stage.
