South Africa's illegal gambling surge drains R50 billion yearly from economy

South Africa's online gambling sector is facing growing concerns over unlicensed operators and their impact on vulnerable users. Over 2,000 illegal platforms actively targeted South African players in 2024, with an estimated 16 million people engaging with them in the past year. Industry experts and regulators are now calling for stricter safeguards and better enforcement to address the issue. A recent report revealed that around 62% of all online gambling in South Africa takes place on unlicensed sites. These platforms divert over R50 billion annually from the local economy, raising alarms among regulators and licensed operators. The National Gambling Board has highlighted structural problems in the industry, including slow transformation and high market concentration.

The South African Bookmakers' Association (SABA) has pushed for stronger protections for at-risk groups, particularly those targeted by illegal operators. Laurence Michel, CEO of Betway Africa, argued that consistent regulation and accountability are key to combating unlicensed gambling. Meanwhile, Duncan Garvie, Founder of BetBlocker, stressed the need for accessible player protection tools across Africa.

Jonathan S., Head of Commercial Finance at ParentPay Group, proposed treating gambling deposits like loan applications to reduce harm. Robin Bennett, Head of Regulatory and Compliance at the Western Cape Gambling and Racing Board, reinforced the role of licensed operators and regulators in maintaining a fair and trustworthy gambling environment. The rise of unlicensed gambling platforms has led to financial losses, addiction risks, and mental health struggles for many users. With over R50 billion leaving the country each year, regulators and industry leaders are under pressure to strengthen oversight. The push for better safeguards and responsible gambling measures continues as the sector seeks long-term solutions.
