Sonos reveals details on the innovative speaker design, Sound Motion, found in the Arc Ultra, a groundbreaking product within their lineup, stating it couldn't be any differently.

In a groundbreaking move, Sonos unveiled the Sonos Arc Ultra soundbar in 2024, featuring their innovative Sound Motion technology. This technology, engineered in-house by Sonos, marks a significant advancement in audio engineering.

The Sound Motion speaker at the heart of the Arc Ultra is a unique design, consisting of four magnetic motors, one in each corner, working in pairs. To accommodate this compact yet powerful technology, more than 900 digital prototypes were created, with the final design being meticulously adapted to fit the Arc Ultra's soundbar.

The Sound Motion speaker's design posed challenges due to the distance between the magnetic coils, which increased with the rectangular shape of the Arc Ultra. To overcome these challenges, Sonos' tooling team worked tirelessly to ensure the long, flat design of the Sound Motion transducer could maintain its flatness without any warping.

The Sound Motion speaker is force-cancelling, reducing unwanted vibrations, and is highly efficient in terms of sound produced for its size. It can move almost a liter of air, similar to a 10-12 inch conventional subwoofer driver. The speaker's cone had to be reengineered to survive the long pressures during the playback of music.

The first prototype of the Sound Motion speaker designed for the Arc Ultra was leaky everywhere and had to be made airtight. Unique suspension brackets were designed around the magnets to keep everything in place, even as it moves. The material used in the Sound Motion speaker's cone is similar to the material used in the Sonos Era 100 and Era 300 speaker cones.

Interestingly, Sonos acquired the Sound Motion technology from Mayht in 2022. Sonos is now working on acoustic innovation and exploring applications for this technology, such as more bass, more compact form factors, and more energy efficiency.

The Sound Motion speaker in the Arc Ultra has the same output as all the woofers in the original Arc combined, making it a powerful addition to Sonos' soundbar lineup. The Sonos Arc Ultra with Sound Motion technology is a testament to Sonos' commitment to innovation and pushing the boundaries of audio technology.
