Solutions for Swollen Eyes Caused by Crying

Family medicine provider Amy Bernstein, DO, at the Cleveland Clinic, shares home remedies to reduce the appearance of puffy eyes from crying.

When tears flow, they can lead to swollen eyes due to fluid accumulation under and around the eye. This can cause blood vessels in and around the eyes to dilate, making them appear red and irritated.

But fear not, for there are several at-home treatments that may help reduce swelling and irritation.

One of the best remedies for most people is time. However, if you're looking for immediate relief, various items can be used as a cold compress. An ice pack, bag of frozen vegetables, cold cucumber slices, cold tea bags, or cold spoons can all provide relief. Dr. Bernstein recommends using a bag of frozen peas as a cold compress due to its ability to mold to the area and provide good coverage.

Applying a chilled eye cream or eye serum can also help reduce puffiness around the eyes. Many eye creams and serums contain ingredients like caffeine, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid to help reduce puffiness and brighten the area.

When applying a cold compress, apply it for 10 minutes, and take it off sooner if it becomes uncomfortable. Gently tapping or massaging the eye area may be helpful, but touching the delicate skin in the eye area can sometimes be irritating and worsen swelling. Dr. Bernstein advises starting the massage at the nose and working your way outward.

Lying down completely flat is not good for swelling, and propping the head up with extra pillows can help. Face rollers made from jade or rose quartz can also help reduce inflammation and puffiness around the eyes. When using a face roller, roll out from the center of the face and eyes in one direction.

However, it's important to note that using a new skin care product around the eyes can potentially cause a reaction due to the thin and sensitive skin. Dr. Bernstein also advises caution when applying solutions like witch hazel or hemorrhoid cream for reducing puffy eyes as there's no scientific data confirming their effectiveness.

If concerned about the puffiness around the eyes, experiencing any eye pain, or if the puffiness doesn't go away after a few days, it may be time to see a healthcare provider.
