Solingen secures €3M for sports, culture, and urban renewal projects
Solingen has secured over €3 million in funding from North Rhine-Westphalia’s 2023 Urban Development Programme. The money will support four key projects across the city, including improvements to sports facilities, cultural sites, and neighbourhood management.
The funding forms part of a wider €386.2 million investment across 225 projects in the region.
The largest share for Solingen—€1.814 million—will go to the Wald district. This will fund neighbourhood management schemes and upgrades to local sports facilities.
Another €758,000 has been allocated for Schloss Burg. The funds will develop a new cultural trail and redesign the castle square. The City 2030 project will receive €448,000 to support various urban development initiatives. Meanwhile, no funding was approved for the proposed renovation of Jahnkampfbahn stadium or its multi-purpose sports field. North Rhine-Westphalia’s total contribution to the 2023 programme stands at €202.9 million. The federal government is providing €146.6 million, with the European Union adding around €36.7 million.
Solingen’s €3.02 million share will target infrastructure, culture, and community projects. The funding reflects the city’s inclusion in a broader regional programme supporting 225 initiatives. Work on the approved schemes is expected to begin in the coming months.
