Solar power facility commences operations near Cēsis
New Solar Power Plant Opens in Cēsis, Latvia
A significant step towards a greener future has been taken in Latvia with the opening of the 'C SES' solar power plant. The new facility, located in the town of Cēsis and its surrounding area, is one of seven plants implemented by Merito fund and Saules Energy, with a total capacity of 63 MW.
The owner of the 'C SES' plant is the domestic investment fund "Merito Sustainable Energy Fund I" (Merito fund). With an installed capacity of 19.8 MW, the plant is the latest addition to the growing number of renewable energy projects in Latvia, as per the goal set by Kaspars Melnis, Minister of Climate and Energy.
The 'C SES' plant, spread over an area of 23 hectares, boasts more than 33,500 solar panels. The Speaker of the Saeima, Daiga Mieriņa, who opened the plant, stated that it is one of the largest renewable energy projects in Latvia.
The solar power plant in Cēsis is connected to distribution infrastructure, allowing electricity production close to its consumers. The general contractor for the 'C SES' project is the Latvian company KL Systems. More than 80 Latvian private and institutional investors have attracted capital for the plant, with a total investment of 12 million euros.
The new power plant is expected to annually produce at least 20,400 MWh of renewable energy, enough to supply green electricity to 10,000 households. Jānis Rozenbergs, chairman of the municipality of Cēsis region, stated that the county is among the few in Latvia where a majority of residents and businesses will produce electricity from a large-scale solar power plant.
Merito fund, along with Saules Energy, has implemented solar power plants in Zilupe, Brenguli, Inčukalns, Carnikava, Kalkūne, Koknese, and Cēsis. Kaspars Melnis, Minister of Climate and Energy, stated a goal to promote the development of renewable energy projects in Latvia. The minister emphasised the need to diversify the energy production basket in Latvia as much as possible.
However, there is no information available about the name of the operator of the newly opened solar park in Cēsis. Despite this, the 'C SES' plant marks a significant milestone in Latvia's transition towards a more sustainable energy future.
