Soder revels in the unveiling of Munich's expanded S-Bahn trains, hinting at their alluring dimensions.

The future of public transportation in Munich is taking shape, as Deutsche Bahn and Siemens Mobility unveiled a 22-meter-long model of the upcoming XXL S-Bahn trains at Munich's Königsplatz. This new train, designed with a focus on durability, energy efficiency, and passenger comfort, is set to revolutionise the city's rail network, starting from 2028.

Bavaria's Minister of Transport, Christian Bernreiter (CSU), highlighted the significant investment of over two billion euros Bavaria is making in this project. The new S-Bahn trains, 202 meters long and significantly longer than current trains, will offer 10 centimeters more legroom for passengers, ensuring a comfortable journey for all.

The new S-Bahn will consist of 13 cars, each with a width of around three meters, providing ample space for its 480 seats and a maximum capacity of 1,841 people. Entrance and exit will be via 31 doors, 1.40 meters wide and located on both sides, ensuring a swift boarding and alighting process.

One of the key features of the new S-Bahn is its barrier-free access. Wheelchair areas and lowered displays with passenger information at both ends have been improved, making the trains accessible to all.

The new S-Bahn will also boast an advanced air conditioning system that regulates the temperature between -25 and 45 degrees, ensuring a comfortable journey no matter the weather. Externally, the new S-Bahn will have a continuous LED strip above the doors, lighting up in the respective line colour for easy identification.

In a nod to its modern design, the new S-Bahn will appear in white and blue instead of the classic red and white. Honourary guest Markus Söder, who also enjoys driving ICE trains and cars, called the project "a pretty cool thing." He emphasised the importance of functioning S-Bahns for car drivers, as they relieve roads and reduce traffic jams.

The goal of the new S-Bahn is to provide more punctuality, capacity, and comfort, as well as real barrier-free access. The first XXL S-Bahn trains are scheduled to be introduced into passenger service by the end of 2028.

The new S-Bahn trains for Munich, being built by Siemens Mobility in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn, will weigh 365 tons on the tracks. Some of these trains will be built in Allach, Bavaria. Each train will also be equipped with WLAN, ensuring passengers stay connected throughout their journey.

Visit Königsplatz from Tuesday until September 14, from 11 am to 9 pm, and Sundays from 10 am to 5 pm, to view the model of the new S-Bahn free of charge. This is a unique opportunity to get a glimpse of Munich's future public transport system.
