Soccer Association UH-H has added 27 new members to the Vulcans team.

University of Hawaii Hilo Soccer Teams Gear Up for New Season

The University of Hawaii Hilo soccer teams are preparing for an exciting new season, with significant changes in their rosters.

Men's Team Readies for Training

The men's team, under the guidance of head coach Diego Marroquin, has welcomed 11 new additions in 2023. The roster now consists of 32 players, with 17 being upperclassmen and 11 being seniors. The team's first training sessions begin on Aug. 18.

Among the newcomers are 5 freshmen and 6 transfers, including Diego Bastias, Emilio Gonzalez, Gudmundur Ingason, Ingolfur Ingason, Jesse Murillo, Mahmoud Musa, Jose Ortiz, Iago Perez Ferreiro, Nolan Richards, Kalen Toguchi, and Tim Mathis Zimmermann.

The men's team also has 20 returners, including 13 starters with significant experience. Notable returners include sophomore midfielder Riley Welse from Sydney, Australia, and junior midfielder Caroline Stringfellow from Syracuse, Utah.

Women's Team Welcomes Largest Incoming Class

Meanwhile, the women's team, under the leadership of head coach Gene Okamura, is welcoming the largest incoming class during his 10-season tenure. A total of 16 newcomers will join the team for the upcoming season.

The newcomers include Camila Abrego, Delany Barbee, Mia Berney, Kaitlyn Brooks, Shae Dougherty, Olivia Gonser, Lydia Keller, Briana Kubli, Makenna Maloy, Natalia Minissian, Brooke Peiler, Melisa Ranvik, Nikkie Scott, and Gabriela Semlick, a freshman goalkeeper from Ridgefield, Washington.

Last Season's Achievements and Future Goals

Last season, the men's team qualified for the Pacific West Conference Championships postseason tournament and finished as runners-up. They also recorded the program's first NCAA postseason win with a victory in the NCAA West Regional First Round.

The women's team's season opener is scheduled for Sept. 5 at home against Chico State. The men's team's first match is yet to be announced.

Both teams are eager to build upon their past successes and are looking forward to a challenging and thrilling new season.
