SMU's No. 16-ranked team secures a victory, with Kevin Jennings throwing a pair of touchdown passes.
In a thrilling display of football, the SMU Mustangs secured a resounding 42-13 victory over East Texas A&M on a chilly afternoon in 2025. The game was marked by impressive offensive and defensive plays, with Kevin Jennings leading the charge for SMU.
The Mustangs struck early, scoring on their third offensive play. Jennings connected with Romello Brinson for a 63-yard touchdown pass, setting the tone for the game. Ahmaad Moses, the safety for SMU, followed suit with a spectacular play, returning an interception 95 yards for a touchdown. This score not only extended SMU's lead but also set a new school record for the longest interception return touchdown in the Mustangs' history.
However, the game was not without its share of setbacks. Jordan Hudson, a key player for SMU, was lost to injury on the first play of the game, apparently hurting his left shoulder area while being tackled. Alexander Kilgore, another defensive standout for SMU, also sustained an injury during the scoring play, appearing to injure his left ankle and not returning for the rest of the game.
East Texas A&M attempted to mount a comeback, with Eric Rodriguez entering at quarterback in the second quarter. Rodriguez showed promise, completing 14 of 30 passes for 191 yards and an interception. However, it was not enough to bridge the gap, and the Lions could only manage to score one touchdown, courtesy of a 1-yard run by Rodriguez with 2:55 left in the game.
Ozlo Rigby, East Texas A&M's kicker, managed to score two field goals during the game, one from 29 yards out with 5:20 left in the second quarter and another as time expired in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Lions, these points were not enough to dent SMU's formidable lead.
Brinson was a standout for SMU, catching seven passes for 121 yards overall. Jennings completed 22 of 30 passes for 260 yards and two touchdowns, with one interception. East Texas A&M struggled to find their footing, managing only 107 yards collectively on the ground.
Despite the injuries and the Lions' best efforts, the SMU Mustangs proved too strong, securing a decisive 42-13 victory. The win marks a significant milestone for the Mustangs, further cementing their place as a force to be reckoned with in college football.
